Summary Post

My name is Brittany Murray and I am a senior at Meredith College.  I am a Child Development major obtaining a Birth through Kindergarten teaching license and a minor in Psychology.  I have always enjoyed taking photographs; however, I did not know the ins and outs of photography, how to correct a photo, or how to photograph moving subjects.  I learned of this course and the partnership with the Wake County Animal Center and I knew this was the perfect class for me!  I wanted to learn more about photography, cameras, and editing photos.  When I found out I could do all of these things while helping animals find homes, I was beyond excited.  I have learned so much throughout my time in this course!  Using the skills and techniques I learned in my photography class and applying them at the Wake County Animal Center was the most valuable aspect of this class.  I was practicing my photography skills and making a difference in the lives of animals at the same time!  I have a passion for helping others and helping animals has been so incredibly rewarding and a great fit for me!  When I first learned about Photoshop, I had no idea that I would become confident in using this program!  I was surprised that I learned how to make an animal appear more adoptable.  I learned how to lighten the eyes and ears, how to crop the image, how to use the cloning tool to remove eye gunk, how to save the files, and many other features.
I was not expecting to become this confident in Photoshop.  It is no longer scary to see a picture come up in Photoshop on my screen!  Before this course, I had no idea how to edit an image in Photoshop or how to photograph animals.  I have never been able to capture good pictures of my own dog because he is always on the move.  Professor Johnstone has taught me many techniques about how to get animal's attention and snap a photograph of them.  I had no idea I would learn so much about the Wake County Animal Center or animal overpopulation.
Photography can make an impact on animal overpopulation!  For example, our class has been taking photographs at the Wake County Animal Center to help these animals find homes.  By helping these animals find homes, we are reducing animal overpopulation.  If these animals were not spayed or neutered and were running around the community, they would be able to reproduce and thus creating animal overpopulation.  The Wake County Animal Center spays and neuters pets before they are adopted.  This is one example of helping with animal overpopulation.

This photograph of Chief Finn made a positive impact.  This photo that I captured and corrected was loaded onto the Wake County Animal Center's website for the public to see.  Chief has been adopted!  I am so happy to hear of Chief's adoption and so excited that he has a forever home!  This shows that our photos make a difference in the lives of these animals!  There are many more animals that have been impacted as a result of our class!

Animal Overpopulation

Describe and Interpret:  What do the words, "Animal Overpopulation" mean?  I am sure that these words mean different things to different people.  In my personal opinion, animal overpopulation means that people are not having their pets spayed and neutered and there are many, many animals being produced because of this.  When pets are not spayed or neutered, they are able to reproduce.  There are so many animals that are out on the streets, in animal centers, or unable to find homes due to overpopulation.  It is imperative to educate the public on the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
Through volunteering at the Wake County Animal Center, I have learned that although the center can house hundreds of animals, it is important to control the population of animals.  Unfortunately, if animals have diseases and continue to reproduce, the disease is being spread.  It is so important to control animal population to ensure that all of these animals find homes and less animals spend time at local animal centers.  This class has brought my attention to animal overpopulation and I am going to continue to advocate to spay and neuter pets and to think about adopting a pet from a local animal center.  I want to be an advocate in the community for adopting from an animal center and helping people to understand what animal overpopulation truly is.
The sad part about animal overpopulation is that many people do not have the experiences that we in this class do and it simply falls behind a long list of daily priorities and other tasks that must get accomplished.  People do not spend time thinking about ways to control the animal overpopulation.  It's one of those, "I'm just one person so what could I possibly do about this" kind of issues.  However, we must inform others that although you are only one individual, you can have a huge impact on animal overpopulation.  Make the decision to spay or neuter your pet and encourage others that you know to do the same.  Also, encourage others to visit a local animal center and adopt an animal.  These animals need homes and love, too.
Evaluate:  Although our society has many members such as the people in our photography class who are well informed about animal overpopulation and the seriousness of this topic; there are also many people who do not know what these words mean and how this impacts our society.  We have to make sure that our voices are heard and that people are receiving information and know the facts about animal overpopulation.  This is why the pamphlets, brochures, and newsletters in the three step plan I thought of would be beneficial.  These could help reach more of the public and help get the word out about animal overpopulation.  I believe that although we our society is making great strides in combating animal overpopulation, we must continue to make this a priority and not "something that can wait until later."

After This Course...

I have enjoyed every moment that I have spent volunteering at the Wake County Animal Center.  Although some days have been challenging and I have shed some tears, the love that the animals give is worth all of the hard work put into each visit.  It is my hope to continue volunteering at the center even after this course is over.  I realize that when August comes my life will be extremely busy as a senior in college with multiple teaching placements and classes at Meredith; however, this experience has had a big impact on me and I hope to continue volunteering on the weekends.  It is also my hope that I can encourage my friends and other members of the community to volunteer as well.  I will continue to promote the Wake County Animal Center.  I have learned so much and enjoyed helping each animal.  I will continue to promote this class and encourage everyone to volunteer at the center because volunteers truly do make a huge impact.  The workers at the Wake County Animal Center are continuously thanking us for being there and helping.  Everyone is always willing to answer our questions, help us in any way, and just talk with us.  I read a sign at the center last Wednesday that said, "Our volunteers do not get paid because our volunteers are priceless."  I thought about how true that statement was because there are so many animals and such a variety of needs at the center.  The workers alone have an enormous job and it takes many, many volunteers to help the animals.  I hope to be able to take friends with me on the weekends and volunteer in the coming months!
I am so appreciative of the opportunity to volunteer and hope that I can continue to help the animals and volunteer in the future!  Volunteering brings a smile to my face and getting to meet the animals each week is truly a wonderful experience.  It is also a true joy to watch the animals get adopted.  My classmates and I all get excited if we see that an animal has a deposit.  It is a great feeling to know that you have helped an animal find a loving home.  I would encourage volunteering at the Wake County Animal Center...and I can promise it will be a great experience for you!

Brianna snapped this photograph on June 6th!  The little boy I am helping walked up to me and said, "Can you help me?"  He had a gown and two gloves in his hands.  My heart immediately smiled (I am a Child Development major) so this completely melted my heart!  I helped the little boy and was able to talk with him about the animals.  I did not even know Brianna had taken these photographs until after the boys had walked away.  Thanks, Brianna!

Brianna took these two photographs of me helping with the gowning and gloving process.  I was so happy to see that even though this child was small, he was following the gowning and gloving procedures.  He came back to gown and glove each time he had been in a kennel with a dog.  Brianna helped the older child with gowning and gloving.  We thought this was very special and Brianna and I were happy to help!  Thank you again Brianna for the photographs!

My Three Step Plan

There are countless opportunities for the public to help the animals at the Wake County Animal Center.  After giving careful thought to a three step plan, I decided that a good friend of mine, Kristin, is a graduate of Meredith College who works in graphic design.  I decided that if I were to volunteer at the center and cuddle with the animals, write about our time together, and potentially still take their photographs, I could work with Kristin and her graphic design skills.  Together, we could create pamphlets, newsletters, and other ways to communicate about these animals to the public.  We could ensure that places such as PetSmart, Petco, veterinary clinics, and other local businesses had these pamphlets and newsletters to spread the word about these animals.  Think of how beneficial all of the information would be at an adoption day at PetSmart.  Working with Kristin to print the cost of adoption and other fees would help inform the public about what to expect.  I would want these pamphlets, newsletters, and other forms of communication to be available to the public.  I have a passion for animals and helping these animals get adopted.  I also have a passion for helping others and by informing the public on adoption fees and potential animals to adopt, I could make a difference.  I truly believe that the public needs to be more informed about just how important it is so spay and neuter pets, to adopt from the Wake County Animal Center, and to provide a loving home for pets.
Step two is working with the artist.  Kristin is a graduate of Meredith and majored in Graphic Design.  She currently works in Graphic Design is very passionate about her work.  I also know that Kristin is passionate about animals and has a dog of her own.  Kristin and I have worked together with Student Advising and make a great team!  I would be very excited to work with her on this type of project.  Step three is working with Kristin to decide the best ways to get information out to the public and what these potential newsletters and pamphlets may look like.  Kristin and I are both in the Raleigh area and could work together on this great project.

I imagine that my three step plan would feature pictures that I have taken at the Wake County Animal Center such as this one.  For example, I could use photographs of animals and discuss the fees that go along with adopting an animal.  I could also discuss the importance of adopting animals from the center.

Prestone 71054

Photo Taken: June 6th, 2012
I would want to feature photographs of both dogs, cats and little critters on the pamphlet to show the animals that the Wake County Animal Center has available for adoption.  The pamphlets could also feature the center's website, address, hours of operation, and phone number.

It is extremely important to post photos of the many different kinds of animals that are available at the center.  For example, I had no idea that the center had little critters such as Roger available for adoption.  This is great information for the public to know!

This Weeks Animals

On June 6th, I visited the Wake County Animal Center.  This week, our goal was twenty one photographs.  I photographed both cats and dogs.  The dogs were extremely playful this week and getting their photographs was more challenging than in weeks past.  I used all of the techniques and "tricks" that I have learned throughout the course to get their attention.  I left the center and went to the Mac Lab and edited photos and managed to edit eleven.  I decided I would finish the photos the next day and I am happy that I was able to edit all twenty one.  I admit that editing twenty one photos was challenging; however, I now know that I am capable of editing twenty one.  I hope you all enjoy looking through this weeks photographs!
