My Point and Shoot!

I have a  Nikon Coolpix L24 14 MP Digital Camera.  I got this camera in the summer of 2011 before I studied abroad in Italy.  I wanted a camera that was light weight and could be packed in a small bag as I toured the country.  I wanted a durable camera and one that was a point and shoot.  I purchased this camera and was able to capture my Italy trip with the camera.  I made a list of both pros and cons for using my point and shoot camera to take pictures of the animals at the Wake County Animal Shelter and I decided that I wanted to take a look at a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera.  After looking at my list of cons, I realized that tomorrow when I visit the shelter, I want to experiment with a DSLR camera that Meredith has available for students to use.  I enjoy my point and shoot camera; however, for the purposes of this class, I want to try a different experience with a different kind of camera.  I feel as though the DSLR would allow me to get more out of my experience as opposed to my point and shoot.  The list of pros and cons that I came up with are as follows:

Pros:
  • Light weight
  • Easy to carry daily
  • Easy to operate
  • Durable
The point and shoot is light weight and allows me to carry it around daily.  I am able to pack the camera up in a small purse.  The point and shoot is easy to operate and was easy to figure out how to use.  The camera is also durable as it traveled to Italy and back and is still able to be used.
Cons:
  • I cannot control as much
  • Constant battle with "settings"
  • More work with Photoshop
  • Images often appear blurry or unclear (more time)
Although the camera is easy to carry around daily and easy to operate, there are many cons as well.  For example, I cannot control as many features as I could on a DSLR camera.  Also, I am constantly battling with the settings of the camera to ensure that my pictures are not "blurry."  I will also have to work with Photoshop more if I use my point and shoot as opposed to the DSLR.  For example, if I use my point and shoot, I have to "trick" Photoshop at times.  I find myself taking more time than I should when taking a picture because I am trying to figure out which setting will give me the most clear picture.

I took a picture of the pros and cons list that I generated.

This is a picture of my point and shoot camera!

Tomorrow I am going to try out the DSLR camera and compare the DSLR to my point and shoot camera.  I look forward to visiting the Wake County Animal Shelter tomorrow and meeting the animals!

    1. Professor Johnstone, I am so glad that I chose to use the DSLR. My point and shoot is fine for everyday use; however, the results I have been getting at the shelter with the DSLR have been terrific! This post and discussing the pros and cons helped me make a decision about the cameras! Thank you for all of your help! I have enjoyed learning about the DSLR and am now planning on buying one before my senior year of college begins!
