Week 3: Strengths and Areas of Improvement

I chose this photograph of Eccentric Eva as one to critique.  This was not my favorite photo that I took; however, I have to give myself credit for learning how to use Photoshop and editing eleven pictures that I am proud of.  I am a perfectionist and will constantly critique what I have done and can be rather hard on myself.  I have been trying to tell myself that I have learned a great deal so far in this course and should be proud of myself for all of the editing and photographs that I have done.
First, I will examine the strengths of this photograph.  For example, Eccentric Eva is looking at the camera.  Eccentric Eva is an energetic puppy and I was pleased that I was able to capture this face on camera.  It was quite difficult to get Eccentric Eva to look at the camera as she wanted to play and wanted all of my attention.  I believe that Eccentric Eva looks adoptable in this picture as she is looking at the camera and has that "aww" factor about her.  Finally, I caught the catch lights in her eyes and she does not appear scared in this photograph.  I feel as though this photo captures her personality!
I also realize that this photo has areas that could be improved.  For example, I could have used the color correcting tool for this particular image.  I could have also used the dodge layer to brighten Eccentric Eva's eyes and ears more.  Finally, I could have used the zoom and gotten closer to Eccentric Eva's face.  After I posted the eleven photos, I realized that a few of them had a "tint" to them.  This photo does have a tint that I did not even realize.
I am glad that I finished the pictures early because it allowed me to go over and refine my blog, comment and post comments to other classmates, and check over my work.  I realized that editing the photographs is a great deal of work but very rewarding to see the images that I created!  I keep reminding myself that although I am not completely confident in the Photoshop program or my editing abilities that I am trying my best and learning all that I can.

  1. I agree with you this is a good image but you could improve it like you said. You can tell you are learning about how to edit photos from this class because you know what you need to do to improve your image. I agree the comments help a lot. It good to get other perspectives on things. Keep up the good work!

    1. Kayley, yes, I'm still learning the ends and outs of Photoshop and will continue to have to practice. I have no history of using Photoshop or anything like it and find it overwhelming; however, I was pleased with my work last week. I will continue to practice using the techniques we are learning and try to keep in mind my perfectionist tendencies!

  2. Brittany, I am proud that you even got a picture of Eccentric Eva's face! She was a wiggle worm! I can relate to being a perfectionist. I want to make sure that everything turns out just right. I think it is important to remember that there will always be improvements that we can make on our photographs and not every one is going to turn out perfect...we might have to remind each other of that! I do agree with both your strengths and area's of improvements. Did you figure out why your pictures have a tint to them? I was in the same cage with you and my pictures don't have that tint so I don't think it was the lighting... could it be a feature on the camera?

    1. Lauren, I was happy I snapped a picture of Eccentric Eva, too! She was a wiggle worm...just so full of puppy love! We will definitely have to remind each other of our perfectionist habits! We will have to remind each other that we can always improve but to be proud and happy of what we do have! We have both learned a great deal in the class already! I did not figure that out...I'm hoping it's something on the camera that can be adjusted. I will ask Professor Johnstone on Wednesday in class. I'll let you know.

  3. I am also in you boat with learning about PhotoShop and how it works. You did a good job however with snapping this picture of Eccentric Eva! Yes there the strengths to this picture and improvements that could be done, but we are still learning. The pictures will turn out better with more practice for sure. I know I need improvements as well and we have learned so much can't wait to get even more photos and spice them up more!

    1. Bailey, it is so nice to know that I am not the only one who is still learning the ins and outs of Photoshop! I am glad you liked the picture of Eccentric Eva! Your reassuring words about us still learning make me smile! It is a learning process but we are in the same boat! Our pictures will continue to improve each time and I cannot wait to see all the progress we make in the weeks to come!

  4. We are all learning Photoshop so don't worry, I am learning too! Hopefully we will all be perfectionist at the end! Eva has such an innocent look in her eyes and I think she will certainly get adopted. Your work is awesome, keep it up! :D

    1. Thank you! It is nice to know that I have such supporting classmates to offer such encouraging words. We are all learning and improving with each photograph we take and edit! Eccentric Eva is a very playful puppy who will certainly be a great addition to any home. I hope she finds a family to adopt her! Thank you for your encouraging comment!

  5. I agree with about the rewards of this class. This is my second photoshop class and I actually feel like I'm learning more in this class because I am using it immediately and at my own pace. I get to get comfortable with what I'm learning before I have to move on to something else. Having Prof. Johnstone work with us individually helps a lot. It's good that I have a week to work out what I've learned and discover the bugs I can't seem to figure out on my own.

    2. Professor Johnstone, thank you! I am enjoying the course and learning so much. The blog is a great way to be able to look over my work, think about it, process it, and take the feedback I get and work to correct anything I can. I am always trying to better my work! Thank you for the encouraging words!
